Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber Scombrus)

Mackerel is characterized by being one of the most popular fish in the Atlantic region, with a pointed head, its back is blue-green, with black stripes, and a silver belly, its body covered with small scales. Mackerel is very abundant in our waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, during the months of February to May, the peak fishing season. Also called Atlantic mackerel, sarda, verdel, tonino or mackerel. It is a blue fish, with salt water and at maturity they feed on crustaceans, mollusks, sardines, and herring.

Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber Scombrus)

Nutritive Value

Mackerel is included in the group of blue fish due to its fat content. Specifically, 100 grams of edible portion of this fish provide 10 grams of fat. The fat present in oily fish and, therefore, in mackerel, is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and make the blood more fluid, which reduces the risk of formation of clots or thrombi. Mackerel meat is a good source of proteins of high biological value and contains different vitamins and minerals. Among the vitamins are those of group B such as vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12. In mackerel, vitamin B12 is present in significant quantities and exceeds that contained in eggs and a large part of meats, foods of animal origin, the exclusive natural source of this vitamin. It has fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D and E, which accumulate in its viscera and in the muscle: Vitamin D favors the absorption of calcium, vitamin A contributes to the maintenance, growth and repair of the mucous membranes, skin and other tissues of the body . Vitamin E highlights its antioxidant action and constitutes a protective factor against certain degenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
